It was over ten years ago when I was working at Shanghai Garrison Command that I got to know General Ren Yonggui. This time, because of General Teapots, I had a chance to meet him again. Comparing with the past, he was older, but still energetic. He looked gentler in casual clothes. Though serving in the army for a long time, he had a good command of the splendid Chinese art and culture. When he was a military student, he studied paintings and calligraphy in his spare time. In the past years, he has almost been a real scholar.
As he is interested in paintings and calligraphy, he also likes the tea culture, and therefore, he is in love with traditional teapots. Of course, Yixing purple sand pots are his favorite collection. One day in early summer this year, the famous traditional Chinese painter Zhao Rennian, senior editor Wang Jinhai, and the famous connoisseur Tu Jichun visited General Ren and asked him to perform tea ceremony. They talked freely about the calligraphy and carving art and appreciated the purple sand pot with the seal of Ren Yonggui. Suddenly someone replied, "Why not make a General Pot inscribed and painted by General Ren himself?" General Ren also said,"Good idea! 1 happen to get the seal from a Taiwan seal cutter."
Thus the plan of surfaced. According to the military of General Ren, a plan of four pots was determined. General Ren required the teapot to be simple, generous and new. With such a plan and the design requirements, Tu Jichun, Wang Jinhai and other friends went to Yixing to visit famous pot-makers for many times. According to the requirements of General Ren. they enriched details. Wang Jinhai painted the first draft, the famous ceramist Wang Haijin drew a design, with the help of Mr. Shao Jiasheng-- the famous ceramist and Vice President of Yixing Art Society+ the vivid set of General Teapot came into being. Ac-cording to the different appearance, the four teapots are respectively named General Command Pot, General Seal Pot, General Power Pot, and General Degree Pot, with different inscriptions of plum. orchid, bamboo, or chrysanthemum on the body. All the four pots have the seal of "Teapot of General Ren" on the outer bottom. Seals of designers Rennian, Jinhai, and Jichun could be found inside the cover, and the seal of ceramist Wang Haijin could be seen in the inner bottom.
As the teapots bear smooth lines and good combination of firmness and flexibility, it won good remarks from the pot makers in Yixing. General Ren loves them very much. In addition, Cfien Shifa- the famous raditional Chinese painter was in hospital when he heard about the General Teapot, but he inscribed characters of General Teapot for him in a high mood.
The four General Teapots in front of me is the first example in Chinese pot making history. As it was created before the 75th anniversary of Army Day, General Teapots also express the deep love for the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
